Should children and young people under 16 be restricted from social media? The recent debate raises varying perspectives on mental health and wellbeing in the digital age. Advocates argue that social media use can negatively impact mental health, potentially leading to issues like anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem — especially among young people whose mental health is already worsening. But on the other side, opponents highlight children's rights when it comes to freedom of expression, their ability to connect with friends, and their ability to learn how to be safe online. Both sides seem to agree — youth mental health is in crisis and something needs to be done to transform the approach. What do you think it will take to help all kids have the chance they need to thrive?#OurKidsCount #ChildMentalHealth #SocialMedia

Smiling Mind's Chief Programs Officer Dr. Kerrie Buhagiar was in The Australian yesterday discussing the importance of building resilience in primary school.“We need to think about mental health as a crucial development focus for children during the early years – just like we do reading, writing and arithmetic. Teaching all kids critical skills around resilience, mental fitness and mental wellbeing is crucial when challenges arise later in life.’’There's so much we can do to help support kids in building these essential skills -in the home and in schools - to make sure Australian children have the chance at lifelong mental health.https://lnkd.in/gTdaKgVq#OurKidsCount #childmentalhealth

The 2025 Federal Budget has failed to adequately address the worsening state of Australian children’s mental health. In neglecting to focus on prevention, we miss the opportunity to change the course of an enduring mental health crisis.“While we respect that budgets need to deal with the immediate challenges, the skyrocketing cost of living pressures in Australia are having a profound impact on the mental health of parents and children. Investing in kid’s mental health services is crucial to ensure the wellbeing of future generations.” Sarah L.Read more: https://lnkd.in/dvUvZjY7#OurKidsCount #ChildMentalHealth #Prevention
