Summary
- Kaiju No. 8 episode #10 is set to premiere on Saturday, June 15.
- Kaiju No. 8 episode #9 throws the story into more action and has an interesting new villain in Kaiju No. 10.
- Episode #9 sets a bad precedent for how the direction of the anime might be heading.
With Kaiju No. 8 now approaching episode #10, the series is likely slowly coming to a close. With that in mind, the action and animation are sure to ramp up as the anime enters its endgame, especially if it ends in a way that sets up a potential second season.
The Sagamihara incident and the fight against Kaiju No. 9 might have only just ended, but barely any downtime was afforded to anyone as Kaiju No. 8 immediately jumped into a new fight against another humanoid Kaiju, the new villain already proving to be a far different sort of villain from Kaiju No. 9.

As sudden as the new development might be, the Kaiju No. 8 anime is sure to get a lot of mileage out of this new development, and after episode #9, episode #10 will be a great way to keep things going.

What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #9
Produced by Production I.G; Storyboarded by Ryōta Furukawa
In Kaiju No. 8 episode #9, “Raid on Tachikawa Base”, just as everyone was getting ready to retire for the night, a fleet of wyvern-like Kaiju attacked from seemingly out of nowhere. Kafka, once again utilizing his knowledge of Kaiju biology, figured out where their weak points were, but the strength and numbers of the Kaiju were still too much for them. Just as things appeared to be hopeless, though, Kikoru arrived with a powerful new weapon and started killing the Kaiju one by one.
With Kikoru’s new battle ax and Reno’s freezing rounds, the Third Division regained momentum in the fight against the Kaiju, but the battle ended up as more of a stalemate between them and the Kaiju, than anything. Fortunately, before anything nasty could happen, the senior members of the Third Division returned to Tachikawa Base to provide reinforcements, and with their assistance, the Kaiju were quick to go down and the battle largely came to an end.

The main voice actors for the Kaiju no. 8 English dub explain how they brought Crunchyroll's new hit anime to life.
While all that was happening, Hoshina fought against Kaiju No. 10, the humanoid Kaiju leading the assault and a surprisingly emotional Kaiju who loved having a good fight. Hoshina was forced to bring out 92% of his suit’s power, and upon doing so, Kaiju No. 10 was defeated with incredible ease. Before Hoshina could land the final blow, however, Kaiju No. 10 went through a sudden mutation that ended with Kaiju No. 10 taking on a giant-sized form to fight Hoshina.

Not much is known about Kaiju No. 10 at this point, but just from Kaiju No. 8 episode #9, he seems to be a perfect foil to Kaiju No. 9’s character. While No. 9 is something of an emotionless planner, No. 10 seems to live for fighting and has much more emotional depth to him, at least by comparison. The differences between Kaiju No. 9 and Kaiju No. 10’s characters do a lot to highlight how different a villain No. 10 is, and even with just one episode, the dichotomy is adding a lot to the story, as a whole.
Kaiju No. 8 Feels Like It’s Losing What Made It Special
From a purely visual standpoint, Kaiju No. 8 episode #9 was another great episode to watch. The artwork and overall direction for the fight scenes always brought a lot of life to the episode, and more specifically, the animation for Hoshina and Kaiju No. 10’s fight had some of the best choreography and direction in all of Kaiju No. 8. Kaiju No. 8 never fails to deliver when it comes to visuals, and episode #9 is one of its best showings, yet.
Unfortunately, episode #9 does notably stumble in terms of writing. As entertaining as the fighting was, Kaiju No. 8 being so quick to go into another arc of nonstop action provides little room for the story or characters to grow, and much of what happens ends up feeling like mindless action, as a result. It lacks a lot of the heart that earlier episodes had and sets a bad precedent for Production I.G's Kaiju No. 8 being about the action more than anything else, so hopefully, episode #10 and beyond will try and have more going on than just fighting.
Be sure to watch Kaiju No. 8 episode #10 when it releases on Saturday, June 15.
