Frozen Cherry Limeade Margarita

I love Homemade Limeade for an alcohol-free way to cool off, but you can’t beat this frozen concoction when it’s just the adults by the pool.(Did you pick up on that Jimmy Buffett reference?)

As a kid, my very favorite drink in the world was a cherry limeade from Sonic. That flavor always reminds me of summertime, no matter what time of year it is.

I finally made my own Homemade Cherry Limeade recipe (there’s a regular version and a co*cktail version), but that just wasn’t enough.

I had to take it up a notch and create this amazing Cherry Limeade Margarita recipe for the ultimate summer happy hour. And better yet, it’s a FROZEN cherry limeade margarita, because icy drinks are a necessity on pool days.

I’ve made a lot of drinks (and specifically, a lot of margaritas) on my blog, but these are some of the tastiest and easiest. They’re tart and sweet at the same time– a cherry-flavored drink to cherish.

How to Make Frozen Cherry Limeade Margaritas

One of the best things about this Frozen Cherry Limeade Margarita recipe is how easy and quick it is to make. You can’t go wrong with a co*cktail that only requires three ingredients! All you need is limeade concentrate, tart cherry juice, and tequila (plus lots of ice).

  1. Pour the limeade concentrate, water, cherry juice, and tequila into a blender, then fill it up with ice.
  2. Blend on high until the ice crushes and smooths out to the consistency you prefer.
  3. Salt the rims of your glasses, pour the margaritas, and top off with cherries and lime slices.

What’s Tart Cherry Juice?

Tart cherries aren’t what you see in the produce section of your local grocery store. Farmers used to call them sour cherries because they are, well, sour.

It turns out that tart cherries are something of a superfood with their antioxidant properties, so you could maybe even push the idea and call these margaritas a healthy tonic. Or not!

If you can’t find tart cherry juice, you can use grenadine syrup instead.

What’s the Best Consistency for a Frozen Margarita?

There are two schools of thoughts on frozen margaritas. Some folks like them with crunchy with chunks of ice mixed throughout, while others like them smooth and slushy. As long as you’re the person running the blender, you can make the call!

Instructions

  • Pour the limeade, water, tart cherry juice, and tequila into a blender container.

  • Pour into salt-rimmed glasses and top with maraschino cherries and lime slices.

Becky’s tips

  • Tart cherry juice is not the same as bing or sweet cherry juice. I found it in the organic section of my grocery store. Grenadine will also work, but tart cherry juice is better if you can find it.
  • A standard-sized blender holds about 12 cups, so keep that in mind. If you’re going to make several batches of frozen margaritas, you may want to buy a bag of ice at the store.
  • Don’t skip the garnishes for full effect. Salt the glass rims, and pile on the maraschino cherries and lime slices!

Whether the margarita is frozen or on the rocks: A frozen margarita contains more calories and alcohol than a non-frozen margarita. The size of the margarita: A larger margarita will contain more calories and alcohol than a smaller one.

Why are frozen margaritas stronger? ›

Alcohol Dilution

Larger ice cubes take longer to melt, providing a slower dilution process. On the other hand, frozen margaritas provide a more consistent dilution process, since blended or shaved ice is more consistent in size.

How do you make frozen margaritas thicker? ›

“If you don't add enough sugar to a frozen co*cktail it can end up watery,” says Jessica Stewart, bar manager at San Diego's Fort Oak. With a thicker consistency than simple syrup, agave nectar ensures this won't happen and also helps balance the overall profile of the drink.

How do you make a frozen margarita without separating it? ›

Xanthan gum, this is an emulsifier and stabilizer. It's what the big coffee chains use in their frozen drinks to keep them from separating as they melt. I usually use 1/8th of a tsp but you can go up to 1/4tsp. Add this in your dry blend 4.

Can 4 margaritas get you drunk? ›

If you're wondering how many margaritas it'll take to get drunk, we have a very helpful answer: it depends. If you don't drink often and are on the smaller side, it may only take one margarita. If you're a seasoned drinker, it could take a couple margaritas before you're drunk.

How unhealthy is a margarita? ›

Margaritas can be high in sugar, depending on how they are made. Margaritas made from premade mixes, as well as restaurant margaritas, typically have more sugar than homemade ones. Consuming too many added sugars can lead to unwanted weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease ( 9 ).

"You should usually do tequila blanco for margaritas to make the taste smoother," said Sarah Ceniceros, Delish's senior designer.

Does a frozen margarita have more calories than on the rocks? ›

Frozen margaritas at restaurants are often served in massive quantities, especially when they are having a drink special; a 32-ounce “jumbo” marg can weigh in at around 600 calories, while a margarita of the same size on the rocks can be almost twice that amount!

Why do people add triple sec to margaritas? ›

Traditionally, orange has always been a classic pairing for any agave-based spirit, providing a sweeter complement without overpowering the notes of the agave. In Margaritas, the inclusion of triple sec provides a luscious, warm citric note that counterbalances the lime juice's high acidity.

What can I use instead of triple sec in a margarita? ›

If you don't have triple sec handy, you can substitute with another good-quality orange liqueur like Grand Marnier or Cointreau. For a non-alcoholic substitute you can add fresh orange juice, or agave nectar/simple syrup, to add a touch of sweetness.

What can I add to my margarita mix to make it better? ›

A splash of fruit juice can also add some more flavor to your margaritas. Grapefruit juice will give a tart, slightly sour flavor, while pineapple juice creates a more tropical-tasting drink. "Citrus-based juices are essential for balancing out the sweetness of a margarita," David Alan told Insider.

What is the secret to frozen co*cktails? ›

Opt for Crushed Ice

The trick to transforming a co*cktail into a frozen treat is ice. It chills the rest of the ingredients, turning them into a crisp frosted slush. Regular cubed ice still cools your drink. However, it creates a different texture and mixing experience.

Why won't my frozen margaritas freeze? ›

The mix won't freeze, since there's so much alcohol and sugar in it, but it will drop way down in temperature: Ours clocked in at 5°F (-15°C) after an overnight rest.

How do you get the frozen margarita texture? ›

For frozen margaritas, I add at least a full ounce of simple syrup. While this brings balance to the drink, there's an extra benefit. Sugar lowers the freezing point of the mixture more than alcohol alone, giving your drink a smoother texture. With my trusty Vitamix, it comes out as smooth as silk.

Do frozen drinks have less alcohol? ›

"Frozen co*cktails will get diluted as they sit," explains Munoz, so you have to act on the defensive and counteract the problem with more alcohol than you typically would. We needn't remind you that this means you'll feel the effects of the drink faster, so please sip responsibly and keep it classy.

What percent is a frozen margarita? ›

Many bartenders try to keep the total alcohol by volume in a frozen drink to about 10 percent because the higher the alcohol content, the faster the ice will melt.

Alcohol content:

2.1 units of alcohol. 16.42% alc./vol. (32.84° proof)

What's the difference between a daiquiri and a frozen Marg? ›

The main difference is the alcohol in each co*cktail. Margaritas are made with tequila and sweetened with triple sec, while daiquiris are made with white rum and simple syrup for sweetener. Their common ingredients are lime juice, lots of ice and sometimes fruit juices.
