Top Tips

  • Using more flavorful beers and ales — say, Sam Adams, will have more flavor and dark beers even more.
  • You can use a toothpick to gauge if the bread is done. If you pull out a toothpick cleanly, the bread is done.
  • If you’re not comfortable using a toothpick to determine if the bread is done, a more definitive test is using an instant-read thermometer — it should read about 200º F.
  • Serve with pasta, soups, stews, within dips, or even on its own!

FAQs

What is the best beer to use for beer bread? ›

Lighter beers, such as lagers, ales and pilsners, will give your bread a lighter color, and mild taste that just about everyone loves. Darker beers like stouts and porters make a darker-colored loaf and have a stronger beer flavor. Hoppy beers like IPAs will give your bread a more bitter taste.

Does beer have to be warm for beer bread? ›

Your beer isn't cold yet! Well, don't worry, because when making our beer bread, you can use warm OR cold beer! When pouring the beer into the bowl with the mix, we recommend pouring slowly, so it doesn't over-bubble. The same goes for any carbonated beverage you use to make our Beer Bread Mix; cold or hot will work!

Can you use beer instead of yeast to make bread? ›

Bread recipes call for yeast because carbon dioxide is the key ingredient needed to puff up the dough and make the bread fluffy. Since most beers still contain yeast cells at the end of the fermentation process, you can substitute a can of beer for yeast for a denser result.

Can you make bread with beer instead of water? ›

Beer is grain, yeast and water—it's liquid bread! —so it really compliments a loaf, and as a replacement for water, it adds something special to the most humble bake. It couldn't be simpler to try this out: just get your normal loaf recipe and change out beer for water, 1:1.

Why is my beer bread tough? ›

If you bake an overworked dough, it will come out hard. Even though you aren't kneading beer bread, the same principle applies. It can be harder to tell when the dough is overworked, though, since you won't feel it in your hands and the mixture isn't supposed to be smooth. Instead, rely on your eyes.

Why is my beer bread so dense? ›

Without sufficient leavening from the beer, a loaf of beer bread will be fairly dense and heavy unless an additional leavening agent (e.g., baking soda, baking powder, baker's yeast and sugar, sourdough starter, or wild yeast cultured from the environment) is added.

How do you know when beer bread is done? ›

How Do You Know When Beer Bread is Done? You'll know your beer bread is ready to come out of the oven when the top crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Does the alcohol burn off in beer bread? ›

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), baked or simmered dishes that contain alcohol will retain 40% of the original amount after 15 minutes of cooking, 35% after 30 minutes and 25% after an hour. But there's no point at which all of the alcohol disappears.

Is Miller High Life good for beer bread? ›

I've made beer bread with everything from craft beers (Allagash White, Moosehead, etc.), to commercial beers like Heineken, Miller Highlife, and Samuel Adams Boston Lager (which we found lends more of a pronounced aroma than others on the list, and didn't make our favorite loaf).

Why does beer bread not need yeast? ›

Beer bread is a quick bread recipe that incorporates an entire bottle of beer. And if you're wondering why add the beer, remember this bread has no yeast. The beer acts in place of yeast as the leavening agent, along with the baking powder.

Why is my beer bread crumbly? ›

Don't Overmix. Overmixing the batter can cause the bread to turn out tough or crumbly. Stir gently and stop as soon as the flour disappears (and any mix-ins are incorporated).

What pairs well with beer bread? ›

Think brisket, chicken, ribs, steaks, pork loin – all pair wonderfully with a slice of beer bread. When you're trying to keep it lighter, pair beer bread with your favorite salad. We highly recommend Caesar salad!

What does adding milk instead of water do bread? ›

It adds nutritional value to baked goods. Mainly protein, calcium, and vitamin B12 which are all necessary for a heathy diet. But we don't only look for the nutritional benefits when using milk in our bread dough. The fat and lactose in milk help with tenderizing the crumb of the bread making it softer and sweeter.

Can children have beer bread? ›

Can children or dogs eat your beer bread? Yes. The majority of the alcohol cooks off while the bread bakes.

What happens if you use milk instead of water to make bread? ›

Milk changes bread recipes by producing a softer loaf, due to the milk fat content, which also gives bread a richer flavor. Bread made with milk browns more easily than bread made with water, as lactose or milk sugar will caramelize as it bakes.

What is the best beer to bake with? ›

Amber and brown ales tend to be less bitter than the alternatives and feature a nutty flavor. Because of this, these beers are often recommended for caramels, cookies, and pies. Light-colored beers have their place in baking, too. Lagers and Witbiers are used in lighter cakes and cookies.

What kind of beer is used in Trader Joe's beer bread? ›

It's also the phrase you'll find gracing each box of Trader Joe's Beer Bread Mix. The flavor of the finished loaf really depends on what kind of beer you use: Go with a lager for a lighter profile, an IPA for a hearty, hoppy taste, or a stout for a rich result with a slightly darker finished product.

What type of beer has the most yeast? ›

Hefeweizen is a classic example of beer that is not especially high in alcohol, typically coming in between 4% and 6%, but it has perhaps the highest levels of yeast suspended in the beer. Hefes are known for their cloudy, hazy appearance and their nice thick head.

What beer is good for cooking? ›

Wheat beers are great for chicken and seafood. If you're cooking pork, beef, and lamb, you will need ales, porters, and stouts. Hearty meat goes well with belgian ales. Stews pair well with ale.
