This easy Italian Beef recipe comes together quickly, uses only simple ingredients, has the best flavor, and is the perfect meal for busy weeknights.

Plus, by using the Italian seasonings dressing packets, you eliminate the need to measure out a bunch of spices, making it one of my favorite easy weeknight dinners.

It’s also a great meal to serve when you need a main dish to serve a crowd – such as a potluck or family gathering. Plus, it makes one of the best Italian Beef dipping sauces I’ve ever tasted!

What Makes Italian Beef “Chicago Style”?

Chicago Style Italian Beef Recipe (Slow Cooker and Instant Pot Directions) - Snug & Cozy Life (2)

A traditional Chicago Style Italian beef sandwich, which dates back to the 1930s contains thin slices of roast beef (although I think that this shredded version is just as yummy and easier to serve!).

It’s simmered and served au jus on Italian-style deli rolls. The beef is then topped with a giardiniera mix or sauteed with Italian sweet peppers. Often topped with a slice of provolone cheese, the sandwiches are then dipped in the delicious au jus created as the roast beef simmers.

What is an Italian Beef Sandwich Recipe vs French Dip Sandwiches?

Italian Beef is generally a roast cut of beef seasoned with herbs, spices, and picked vegetables. A French Dip recipe usually involves thinly sliced prime rib that’s been braised in broth. Both make great sandwiches and are amazing served with a side of your favorite au jus recipe.

How to Make Instant Pot Italian Beef Recipe

Begin by placing the beef chunks into your Instant Pot and pouring 1/4 cup of the giardiniera brine over the beef.

Next, mix the beef broth and Italian seasoning dressing packets together in a medium-sized saucepan. Cook on high heat until the broth begins to boil, then turn the heat to low and allow to simmer for 2-3 minutes.

Pour the broth mixture over the beef chunks.

Set your Instant Pot on high pressure and set the cook time to 60 minutes.

When the cook time is done, allow the pressure cooker to perform a natural release for about 15 minutes. (After 15 minutes, you can manually release any remaining pressure.)

Shred the beef, saving the broth in your Instant Pot.

You can simply top the shredded meat with giardiniera and serve. I like to fill a crusty Italian-style roll with the shredded beef and top it with a slice of provolone cheese and a dollop of mustard. Serve with a side of au jus for dipping.

What Can I Do With Any Leftover Beef

Leftover Italian beef roast can be stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

One of my favorite ways to use leftover is by making “Italian Beef Pizzas”:

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Take a premade pizza crust, flatbread, or piece of naan bread and spread a layer of leftover meat on top of it
  • Top with your choice of toppings: Chicago-style giardiniera, red bell peppers, green peppers, onions, hot peppers, banana peppers, and pepperoncini are all great options
  • Top with your choice of cheese
  • Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until it’s warm throughout and the cheese has melted

FAQs

What is the less normal more setting on instant pot slow cooker? ›

First select 'slow cook' mode. Set your cooking time. Within 10 seconds of setting your cooking time, press the 'adjust' key to toggle between 'less' (keep warm mode on a CrockPot), 'regular' (low on a CrockPot), and 'more' (high on a CrockPot.)

Do you close vent on Instant Pot when slow cooking? ›

Another tip, taken from an Instant Pot Facebook group, is to open the valve all the way on your Instant Pot lid when slow cooking. This allows some moisture and steam to release and keeps the Instant Pot from overcooking your slow cooker recipes.

What are the slow cooker options on Instant Pot? ›

Rio and Duo models offer three different temperatures: Low/Less, Medium/Normal, and High/More. Pro models only offer Low and High. Set the time. Set the cooking duration between 30 minutes and up to 99 hours, depending on the model.

Do you vent or seal Instant Pot slow cooker? ›

What Venting Setting Should I Use to Slow Cook in My Instant Pot? If you use the normal lid, make sure the value is set to venting because we are not trying to build up pressure to use this setting. You could also use the Instant Pot glass lid accessory, but you may already have a pot lid that will do the job.

Is low on Instant Pot same as low on crock pot? ›

That's incorrect: Low on one is not equivalent to Low on the other. If you're adjusting a slow cooker recipe to prepare in an Instant Pot as a slow cooker, and the slow cooker recipe calls for cooking on Low, set the Instant Pot to Slow Cook Normal and cook for the same amount of time suggested in the original recipe.

How long does Instant Pot take compared to slow cooker? ›

Generally, if your slow cooker meat, soup, or stew recipe calls for 8 hours on the low setting or about 4 hours on the high setting, it should be fully cooked in about 25 to 30 minutes in the Instant Pot. For chicken or turkey, use the 15-minute poultry button. While volume doesn't matter, density does.

Can an Instant Pot do the same thing as a slow cooker? ›

Just remember that all Instant Pots are multi-cookers, which means they slow cook and pressure cook, and Crock-Pots are usually only slow cookers. If you only care about slow cooking, then go for a stand-alone slow cooker like a Crock-Pot.

How long does Instant Pot take to preheat for slow cooking? ›

Preheating can take between 5 to 45 minutes—potentially as long as your dish's cook time—which, while annoying, is necessary for the Instant Pot to function properly. During the preheat stage, make sure the steam valve is in the locked, sealed position to ensure pressure is building.

Can you leave an Instant Pot on slow cook overnight? ›

If you are slow cooking in the Instant Pot, you should be able to leave your dish cooking overnight for as long as the recipe dictates. Anything that calls for 8 hours cooking time should be sufficient as long as you make sure you're up in time to take it out of the slow cooker once it's finished.

What happens if you forgot to seal your Instant Pot? ›

If you forget to seal your Instant Pot's valve, the appliance may not work properly. The Instant Pot uses extreme pressure and heat to cook ingredients, which is why it cooks meals so much faster than a stove or slow cooker.
